MUMBAI: New Zealand's boast of being previous World Cup winners will count for little when they take on Sri Lanka in a Super Six game, at the BKC Grounds, in Mumbai, on Friday.
The island nation - the only Asian team remaining - by far have been the toast of the tournament, slaying India and former winners England en route to the Super Six and adding the Kiwis to the list of felled giants is more a possibility rather than just wishful thinking .
For a team that began their World Cup journey with a dream of making it to the Super Six, the Lankans have surpassed their own beliefs and skipper Shashikala Siriwardene feels her girls have every chance to go the distance.
"I think it's an open tournament now. We have it in us to beat anyone. If the players can turn up with performances like ones in the group stages, there is even a possibility of going all the way," said the captain, who scored a handy 59 during her team's defeat of hosts India on Tuesday.
But for any of that to happen, the Lankans will have to throw more than a spirited challenge at New Zealand. The White Ferns have beaten South Africa and Pakistan before going down to rivals Australia in the group stages.
